Order of Multiplication Does Order Matter in Multiplication? Let's see if 1/2×1/4 is the same as 1/4×1/2. Case 1: 1/2×1/4 First, we take 1/2 of a whole, then find 1/4 of that piece. The result is 1/8 of the whole rectangle. Case 2: 1/4×1/2 First, we take 1/4 of a whole, then find 1/2 of that piece. The result is also 1/8 of the whole rectangle. Conclusion: The Order Doesn't Matter! As the visuals show, the final area (the green overlap) is identical in both cases. This demonstrates a core rule of multiplication: a/b×c/d=c/d×a/b
