Explain why the refractive index of any material with respect to air is always greater 1.

The refractive index of any medium with to air is given by the formula: Speed of light in air/speed of light in the medium. Since the speed of light in air is always more than the speed of light in any medium, the ratio will always be greater than 1. Also, the refractive index is a measure of how much the speed of light reduces when it travels through a medium.
