Question 11 (B) Important

Imagine that M. Loisel, from The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, writes a diary entry, exploring the theme of class and social status, and the nature of social mobility, in the context of his own experience. Write this diary entry , as M. Loisel, in about 120 words.

Answer:

Date: 10th January 1885

Dear diary,

I am feeling exhausted and miserable after working hard for ten years to pay off the debt of the necklace that my wife lost at the ball. It was a terrible mistake to let her borrow that necklace from Madame Forestier. She wanted to impress the rich and noble people at the ball, but she ended up losing everything we had.

We had to sell our belongings, move to a shabby apartment, and take up multiple jobs to repay the money we borrowed. We lived a life of poverty and hardship, while Madame Forestier enjoyed her wealth and comfort. We sacrificed our happiness and dignity for a piece of jewellery that turned out to be fake.

I wonder if it was worth it. I wonder if my wife ever realized how foolish she was to be obsessed with class and social status . I wonder if she ever appreciated me for loving her and supporting her despite her vanity and ingratitude. I wonder if we will ever find peace and joy again.

Yours sincerely,

Loisel

Step-by-Step explanation by Teachoo:

The answer is a diary entry that expresses the thoughts and feelings of M. Loisel, a character from The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. It is also called a personal or reflective writing. 📝 The answer has four parts: a date, a salutation, a body, and a signature. 🧩

  • The date is "10th January 1885". It indicates when the diary entry was written. It also matches the historical setting of the story. 🗓️
  • The salutation is "Dear diary". It shows that the diary entry is addressed to the diary itself, as a confidant and a friend. It also creates a tone of intimacy and honesty. 🙋‍♂️
  • The body gives three paragraphs that describe the situation, the problem, and the reflection of M. Loisel. It also shows his emotions, opinions, and questions. It also relates to the theme of class and social status, and the nature of social mobility, in the context of his own experience. 📚
  • The signature is "Yours sincerely, Loisel". It shows that the diary entry is written by M. Loisel himself. It also creates a sense of authenticity and identity. ✍️

The answer uses transition words to connect the sentences and make them flow smoothly. 💯
