  • The energy required by the body for all its functions is generated in the mitochondria .
  • This energy is released in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) .
  • Mitochondria is one of the few organelles that has its own unique DNA  
  • It is also able to produce some of its own proteins as it contains ribosomes .
  • It is a double membraned structure (having 2 membranes).
  • The outer membrane is porous while the inner membrane is folded .
