What is Atomicity?

Number of atoms in a molecule of element is called atomicity

  • Some atoms are Monoatomic

They have 1 atom which exists independently

Example-Argon (Ar), Helium (He)

 

  • Some atoms are Diatomic

They have 2 atoms chemically combined together

Example - Oxygen (O 2 ), Hydrogen(H 2 ), Nitrogen(N 2 ), Chlorine(Cl 2 )

 

  • Some atoms are Tetra-atomic

They have 4 atoms chemically combined together

Example-Phosphorus(P 4 )

  • Some atoms are Polyatomic

They have many atoms chemically combined together

Example- Sulphur(S 8 ) has 8 atoms chemically combined together
