Example 11 Obtain the factors of ๐‘ง^2 โ€“ 4z โ€“ 12. ๐‘ง^2 โ€“ 4z โ€“ 12 By middle term splitting = ๐‘ง^2+"2z"โˆ’6๐‘ง โˆ’ 12 = (๐‘ง^2+"2z" )โˆ’(6๐‘ง + 12) Both have z as common factor Both have 6 as common factor = z (z + 2) โˆ’ 6 (z + 2) Taking (z + 2) common = (z + 2) (z โˆ’ 6) Splitting the middle term We need to find two numbers whose Sum = โˆ’4 Product = โˆ’12 So, we write โˆ’4z = 2z โˆ’ 6z
