  • I Cannot Remember My Mother is a poem in which the poet remembers his mother, who died when he was a very small child. He cannot picture her face, but he feels her presence through small everyday things.
How the Poet Remembers His Mother
Through Sound (Stanza 1)
A tune while playing
the song she hummed to rock his cradle
Through Smell (Stanza 2)
The shiuli flowers
their smell and the temple scent feel like her
Through Sight (Stanza 3)
The wide blue sky
its calm stillness feels like her gentle gaze
  • So even though the poet has no clear memory of her face , his mother feels always present around him - in a tune, a smell and the quiet sky. The poem is full of love, calm and gentle sadness .
