Example 8 An auto-rikshaw fare starts at ₹25 and remains the same for the initial 2 km. Then it increases by ₹15 per km. What will be the fare for a travel of 10 km? Km travelled 1 2 3 4 5 6 Fare (₹) 25 25 Given that An auto-rikshaw fare starts at ₹25 and remains the same for the initial 2 km. Then it increases by ₹15 per km. Thus, we can write Fixed Fare = ₹ 25 And, Fare after 2km = ₹ 15 per km Let Number of km travelled = k So, we can write Fare charged = Fixed Fare + Fare after 2km × Distance more than 2 km = 25 + 15 × (n – 2) But, this is valid for n ≥ 2 Now, we are asked what will be the fare for a travel of 10 km So, we can use the formula, and put n = 10 Fare charged = 25 + 15 × (10 – 2) = 25 + 15 × 8 = 25 + 120 = ₹ 145 Thus, ₹ 145 is charged for travel of 10 km
