Question 4 - Figure it out (Page 162-164) Consider a rectangle and a parallelogram of the same sidelengths: 5 cm and 4 cm. Which has the greater area? [Hint: Imagine constructing them on the same base.]Finding Area of Rectangle Here, Length = 5 cm Breadth = 4 cm Thus, Area of Rectangle = Length × Breadth = 5 × 4 = 20 cm2 Finding Area of Parallelogram Here, Base = AB = 5 cm Let’s find the Height Drawing perpendicular DX In ∆ DAX, Hypotenuse is AD = 4 cm Height is AX Since Hypotenuse is always greater than Height, we can write AD > AX Or AX < AD AX < 4 cm Multiplying by 5 cm AX × 5 < 4 × 5 AX × 5 < 20 cm2 Thus, we can write Area of Parallelogram < Area of Rectangle
