Perimeter vs Area PERIMETER DEFINITION DISTANCE AROUND THE OUTSIDE. The total length of a shape's boundary, edge, or outline. Measured in Linear Units (e.g., cm, inches, m).AREA DEFINITION SPACE COVERED INSIDE THE BOUNDARY. The total surface coverage within a shape's outline. Measured in Square Units (e.g., sq cm, sq inches, sq m). Thinking about a backyard or a neighborhood park. Perimeter is the Fence: It is the total length of the boundary going around the outside of the yard. If you had to walk along the very edge of the yard, the distance you walked is the perimeter. Area is the Grass: It is the amount of flat space inside that boundary. If you had to mow the lawn, the amount of grass you cut is the area. What is Perimeter? Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a flat, 2D shape. You calculate it by adding up the lengths of all the sides. The Action: Walking around the edge. Key Words to Look For: Fence, border, frame, trim, edge, "around." How to Calculate (Rectangle): Length + Width + Length + Width. Units: Because it is a simple distance, the units are regular lengths like cm, m, or inches. What is Area? Area is the amount of flat space enclosed inside a shape. You calculate it by figuring out how many 1-by-1 squares it takes to cover that entire space without overlapping. The Action: Covering the floor. Key Words to Look For: Carpet, tile, paint, grass, surface, "cover." How to Calculate (Rectangle): Length × Width. Units: Because we are counting squares, the units are always "squared," like sq cm (or cm²), sq m (or m²), or square inches.
