Question 11 – Pattern 1 For each pattern shown below, (i) Draw the next figure in the sequence. (ii) How many basic units are there in Step 10? (iii) Write an expression to describe the number of basic units in Step y.Analysing the pattern In Step 1 Two vertical strips of 3 units on sides One horizontal strip of 3 units Total = 9 squares In Step 2 Two vertical strips of 4 units on sides Two horizontal strips of 4 units Total = 16 squares In Step 3 Two vertical strips of 5 units on sides Three horizontal strips of 5 units Total = 25 squares Thus, In Step 4 Two vertical strips of 6 units on sides Four horizontal strips of 6 units Total = 36 squares Thus, we can say that Number of squares in step y = (y + 2)2 And, Number of unit squares in step 10 = (10 + 2)2 = 122 = 144
