Question 3 When is the sum of two multiples of 3, a multiple of 6 and when is it not? Explain the different possible cases, and generalise the pattern. Now, A multiple of 6 must be divisible by 2 and 3 . Since we are adding multiples of 3 , the sum is already divisible by 3. We just need to check if the sum is even (divisible by 2). Let’s check different cases If you add two odd multiples of 3 (e.g., 3+9=12 ), the sum is even (Multiple of 6 ). If you add two even multiples of 3 (e.g., 6+12=18 ), the sum is even (Multiple of 6 ). If you add one odd and one even (e.g., 3+6=9), the sum is odd (Not a multiple of 6). So, the answer is The sum is a multiple of 6 when both numbers are odd or both numbers are even.
