Question 5 Find the years below. (a) From the present year, which year was it 150 years ago? _____ (b) From the present year, which year was it 2200 years ago? _____ Hint: Recall that there was no year 0. (c) What will be the year 320 years after 680 BCE? ________ The current year is 2025. Remember, the year before 1 AD was 1 BC (or BCE); there was no year 0 Now, let’s do our questions a. Which year was it 150 years ago? This is a simple subtraction: 2025−150 = 1875 So, 150 years ago it was the year 1875 AD So, 150 years ago it was the year 1875 AD (b) From the present year, which year was it 2200 years ago? _____ We need to go back further than the number of years in the AD era. First, let's go back from 2025 AD to the start of 1 AD. This takes 2024 years (2025−1). Now, we find how many more years we need to go back: 2200 − 2024 = 176 years. Going back 176 more years from the start of 1 AD puts us in the BCE era. So, 2200 years ago it was the year 176 BCE (c) What will be the year 320 years after 680 BCE? ________ We need to find the year 320 years after 680 BCE. Think of BCE years as negative numbers. We are at -680 and need to move 320 years towards the present (adding 320). −680+320=−360 This means the year is still in the BCE era. The year will be 360 BCE.
