Question 2 - Figure it out (Page 258) Complete the subtractions: (a) (–5) –(–7) (b) (+10) –(+13) (c) (–7)–(–9) (d) (+3) – (+8) (e) (–2) –(–7) (f) (+3)–(+15) Since we are not asked to do this by token method, we will do by normal method (a) (–5) –(–7) (–5) –(–7) = –5 + 7 = 7 – 5 = 2 (b) (+10) –(+13) (+10) – (+13) = 10 – 13 = –13 + 10 Taking – common = – (13 – 10) = –3 (c) (–7)–(–9) (–7) – (–9) = –7 + 9 = 9 – 7 = 2 (d) (+3) – (+8) (+3) – (+8) = 3 – 8 = –8 + 3 Taking – common = – (8 – 3) = –5 (e) (–2) –(–7) (–2) – (–7) = –2 + 7 = 7 – 2 = 5 (f) (+3)–(+15) (+3) – (+15) = 3 – 15 = –15 + 3 Taking – common = – (15 – 3) = –12
