Rivers are important for the country’s economy because:

  • They provide water for agricultural purposes , especially for irrigation .
  • It also provides fertile soil for agriculture such as alluvial soil - the most fertile soil brought by the Ganga river in the northern plains.
  • They are used for the generation of hydropower electricity.
  • They are used for Navigation and Tourism.  
  • The world’s earliest civilizations developed in the river valleys, e.g., The Nile Valley Civilization, The  Indus Valley Civilization, etc. River valleys are fertile agricultural lands and are densely populated regions.
