The Modern Period and the Colonial Period in India

  • The modern period is generally taken as starting from the eighteenth century , but it may not be an apt description for India under British rule

  • The British treated India as a colony , exploited its resources and hampered its development

  • Indian historians prefer to call this the colonial period , as it reflects the nature of British rule and its impact on India

Time and Dates in History

  • Time and dates in history are not always precise or fixed , especially for social, economic and cultural history

  • History is more about understanding the span of time and the processes of change that occurred over different periods

  • History also depends on the sources and evidence available, which may not always be complete or accurate
