Acid , Bases and Salts are important groups of chemical compounds which are useful to us in many ways.

Acids are sour substances that are acidic in nature.

  • For Example -
The stomach makes an acid (Hydrochloric acid) which is necessary for digestion of food.

Bases are bitter chemical compounds. They are said to be basic in nature .

  • For Example -
Baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) used in baking bread is a base.

Some substances are neither bitter nor sour . These compounds can be categorized as salts .

  • For Example -
Common salt(sodium chloride) used in cooking food is a salt.

We cannot always determine whether a substance is acidic or basic using taste or touch .

We use indicators for this purpose.
