Write equations for the reactions of
(i) iron with steam
Answer
(i) Iron with steam
Iron Reacts with Steam to form Iron Oxide + Hydrogen Gas.
- This is because water is slightly ionised to give hydrogen ions (H + ) and hydroxide ions (OH - ).
- When a reactive metal combines with this water (steam, in this case) it gives electrons to reduce the H + ions to H atoms which later form hydrogen gas .
- Essentially, Iron displaces Hydrogen from water to ferric oxide.
3Fe(s) + 4H 2 O(g) → Fe 3 O 4 (s) + 4H 2 (g)
