Why does a block of plastic released under water come up to the surface of water?

Answer

When an plastic is immersed in water, there are two forces acting upon it

  • Gravitational force in downward direction
  • Buoyant force in upward direction

In this case,

the buoyant force on plastic is more than the gravitational force.

Thus, plastic will come up to the surface of water.
