Ex 3.4, 3 Simplify the expression: (−1/4)+(5/12). Since denominators of both fractions are different Frist, we make denominators same Common denominator = LCM of 4 & 12 = 12 So, our expression becomes (−𝟏/𝟒)+(𝟓/𝟏𝟐)=(−1)/4 ×3/3+5/12 =(−𝟑)/𝟏𝟐+𝟓/𝟏𝟐 =(−3 + 5)/12 =(5 − 3)/12 =𝟐/𝟏𝟐 Simplifying fraction =𝟏/𝟔 =(5 − 3)/12 =𝟐/𝟏𝟐 Simplifying fraction =𝟏/𝟔
