Objective: Find why time periods varied in Activity 8.2 and how to reduce errors.

Possible reasons for variation:

  • Reaction-time error
    Starting and stopping the watch is never instant.
  • Push at release
    The bob may be pushed instead of released gently.
  • String not taut
    Slack in the string changes the effective length.
  • Air currents
    Wind or fan can disturb the swing.

Procedure: Repeat Activity 8.2 carefully indoors with no fan. Time 20 oscillations instead of 10. Check if readings agree more closely.
