- Testes secrete the male hormone called testosterone .
- Ovaries secrete the female hormone called estrogen .
- Testosterone is responsible for changes in boys during puberty .
- Estrogen is responsible for development of breasts and menstrual cycle .
Activity 6.2: Endocrine Glands and Hormones (Page 4)
What you need:
- Table 6.2 showing endocrine glands information
- Pen and paper
What to do:
- Step 1: Look at Table 6.2 carefully
- Step 2: Identify each endocrine gland mentioned
- Step 3: Write down the hormone secreted by each gland
- Step 4: Note the function of each hormone
Observations
What you see:
| Endocrine Gland | Hormone Secreted | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Pituitary | Growth hormone | Regulates body growth |
| Thyroid | Thyroxin | Controls metabolism and growth |
| Testes | Testosterone | Male reproductive development |
| Ovaries | Estrogen | Female reproductive development |
| Pancreas | Insulin | Regulates blood sugar levels |
| Adrenal | Adrenaline | Emergency response hormone |
Why this happens:
We have studied that endocrine glands are ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into bloodstream . This is why each gland produces specific hormones for particular body functions.
- Different glands produce different hormones for specific functions
- Hormones act as chemical messengers in the body
