Question 11 Individual Project: Pick at least one of the following: (a) How Long is a Sentence? Pick any two textbooks from different subjects. Choose any page with a lot of text from each book. (i) Use a dot plot to describe how many words the sentences have on each page. (ii) Compare the data of both the pages using mean and median. (b) What is in a Name? Write down the names of all of your classmates. The following are some interesting things you can do with this data! (i) Find the mean and median name length (number of letters in a name). (ii) Visualise the data and describe its variability and central tendency. (iii) Which starting letters are more popular? Which are less popular? (iv) What is the median starting letter? What does this say about the number of names starting with the letters A – M and N – Z? (v) Plot a double-bar graph showing the number of boys’ names and girls’ names that:I will choose option (b) about Classmate Names because it has fun data to analyze! Step 1: Collect Data (Simulated Classmates) Let's pretend these are the names of 15 students in your class: Aarav, Vivaan, Aditi, Vihaan, Arjun, Sai, Reyansh, Aaryan, Krishna, Ishaan, Sara, Ananya, Diya, Rohan, Pari. Step 2: Analyze Name Lengths (i) Let's count the letters in each name: Aarav (5), Vivaan (6), Aditi (5), Vihaan (6), Arjun (5), Sai (3), Reyansh (7), Aaryan (6), Krishna (7), Ishaan (6), Sara (4), Ananya (6), Diya (4), Rohan (5), Pari (4). Thus, List of lengths: 5, 6, 5, 6, 5, 3, 7, 6, 7, 6, 4, 6, 4, 5, 4 . Sorted: 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7 . Mean Name Length: Sum (79)÷15=5.26 letters. Median Name Length: The 8th number is 𝟓 letters. Step 3: Variability (ii) Most names are between 4 and 6 letters long. The "Variability" (how spread out they are) is low; we don't have anyone with a 2-letter name or a 15-letter name. The smallest is 3 (Sai) and longest is 7 (Reyansh/Krishna). Step 4: Starting Letters (iii) A: Aarav, Aditi, Arjun, Aaryan, Ananya (5 names) V: Vivaan, Vihaan (2 names) S: Sai, Sara (2 names) R: Reyansh, Rohan (2 names) K: Krishna (1 name) I: Ishaan ( 1 name) D: Diya (1 name) P: Pari ( 1 name) Thus, Most Popular: "A" is the most popular starting letter. Least Popular: K, I, D, P all have just 1. Step 5: Median Starting Letter (iv) This is tricky! We have to sort the letters alphabetically: A, A, A, A, A, D, I, K, P, R, R, S, S, V, V. The middle letter (8th one) is 𝐊. Analysis: Since K is the 11 th letter of the alphabet (A-M group), this tells us that most students in this group have names starting with the first half of the alphabet (A-M). Step 6: Vowels and Consonants (v) Let's check the start and end of the names. Start/End Vowel (e.g., Ananya): Aditi, Ananya, Aaryan (No, ends in n), Aarav (No). -> Aditi, Ananya (2) Start Vowel / End Consonant (e.g., Arjun): Aarav, Arjun, Aaryan, Ishaan. (4) Start Consonant / End Vowel (e.g., Diya): Sai, Sara, Diya, Krishna, Pari. (5) Start/End Consonant (e.g., Rohan): Vivaan, Vihaan, Reyansh, Rohan. (4) You would draw a double bar graph here grouping Boys vs Girls, but looking at the totals: Most names in this list start with a consonant and end with a vowel (common for Indian names like Diya, Sara, Krishna).
