Understanding Multiplication Patterns from Table of 3 and –3 Let’s look at this table We observe that –2 × 3 = –3 × 2. So, it doesn’t matter where the negative sign is, the answer remains the same Positive × Positive = Positive Positive × Negative = Negative Negative × Negative = Positive So, we can write If there is one negative sign, answer is negative If there are two negative signs, answer is positive (it’s because even number of negative signs cancel out) From our rules, we can say 2 × -3 × -4 is positive, as even number of negative signs -2 × -3 × -4 is negative, as odd number of negative signs 2 × -3 × 4 is negative, as odd number of negative signs –2 × -3 × 4 is positive, as even number of negative signs
