Question (f) - Page 25 (Figure it out) Let us try to find a few more pairs of numbers from their sums and differences: (f) Sum = –7, Difference = –13 Guessing this would be very time consuming We can do this by Algebra Since we need to find two numbers, We can write the situation as 1st Number + 2nd Number = –7 1st Number – 2nd Number = –13 Adding (1) & (2) (1st Number + 2nd Number) + (1st Number – 2nd Number) = –7 – 13 2 × 1st Number = – (7 + 13) 2 × 1st Number = – 20 1st Number = (−20)/2 1st Number = –10 Now, putting value in (1) 1st Number + 2nd Number = –7 –10 + 2nd Number = –7 2nd Number = –7 + 10 2nd Number = 10 – 7 2nd Number = 3 Thus, the two numbers are –10 and 3
