Question (e) - Page 25 (Figure it out) Let us try to find a few more pairs of numbers from their sums and differences: (e) Sum = –7, Difference = –1 Guessing this would be very time consuming We can do this by Algebra Since we need to find two numbers, We can write the situation as 1st Number + 2nd Number = –7 1st Number – 2nd Number = –1 Adding (1) & (2) (1st Number + 2nd Number) + (1st Number – 2nd Number) = –7 – 1 2 × 1st Number = – (7 + 1) 2 × 1st Number = – 8 1st Number = (−8)/2 1st Number = –4 Now, putting value in (1) 1st Number + 2nd Number = –7 –4 + 2nd Number = –7 2nd Number = –7 + 4 2nd Number = –(7 – 4) 2nd Number = –3 Thus, the two numbers are –4 and –3
