Question (b) - Page 25 (Figure it out) Let us try to find a few more pairs of numbers from their sums and differences: (b) Sum = 4, Difference = 12 Guessing this would be very time consuming We can do this by Algebra Since we need to find two numbers, We can write the situation as 1st Number + 2nd Number = 4 1st Number – 2nd Number = 12 Adding (1) & (2) (1st Number + 2nd Number) + (1st Number – 2nd Number) = 4 + 12 2 × 1st Number = 16 1st Number = 16/2 1st Number = 8 Now, putting value in (1) 1st Number + 2nd Number = 4 8 + 2nd Number = 4 2nd Number = 4 – 8 2nd Number = –8 + 4 2nd Number = –(8 – 4) 2nd Number = –4 Thus, the two numbers are 8 and –4
