The Visual Evolution of Our DigitsThe shape of the digits 0, 1, 2, ..., 9 evolved like We note that It starts with the ancient Brahmi script. This evolves into the Hindu (Gwalior) script, which clearly shows a small circle or dot for zero. The Hindu script then branches out into: Sanskrit-Devanagari (used for Hindi and other Indian languages today). East Arabic (numerals still used in many parts of the Arab world). West Arabic (Gubar). The modern digits we use in English and most of the world today are shown evolving directly from the West Arabic script, passing through forms used in the 11th, 15th , and 16th centuries.
