Question 4 Estimate the number of holidays you get in a year including weekends, festivals and vacation. Then, try to get an exact number and see how close your estimate is. Let’s try Estimation first We count Weekends Summer and Winter Vacations Public Holidays Now, Weekends: About 52 weeks in a year × 2 weekend days = 104 days. Vacations: Summer and winter vacations might total 60 days. About 17 of these would already be weekends, so we add 60 - 17 = 43 extra days. Public Holidays: About 10-15 national and festival holidays that fall on weekdays. Let's estimate 12 days. Estimated holidays Estimated = 104 + 43 + 12 = 159 days. A reasonable estimate is around 150-160 holidays and weekends. Now, let’s find Exact number in 2025 Exact number of Holidays in 2025 1. Weekend Days The year 2025 is not a leap year and has 365 days. Number of Saturdays in 2025: 52 Number of Sundays in 2025: 52 Total Weekend Days: 52 + 52 = 104 days 2. Public and Festival Holidays (on Weekdays) Next, we list the major public holidays in Delhi for 2025 and count only those that do not fall on a weekend. Holi: March 14 (Friday) Eid-ul-Fitr: March 31 (Monday) Good Friday: April 18 (Friday) Buddha Purnima: May 14 (Wednesday) Independence Day: August 15 (Friday) Gandhi Jayanti: October 2 (Thursday) Dussehra: October 22 (Wednesday) Diwali: November 10 (Monday) Guru Nanak's Birthday: November 25 (Tuesday) Christmas Day: December 25 (Thursday) (Note: Republic Day, Eid-ul-Adha, and Janmashtami fall on weekends in 2025, so they are already included in the weekend count). Total Public Holidays on Weekdays: 10 days 3. School Vacations (Excluding Weekends and Public Holidays) This part requires an assumption about typical school vacation periods. Summer Vacation (e.g., May 15 - June 30): This period is about 47 days long. Within these 47 days, there are 14 weekend days (Saturdays/Sundays). This leaves 47 - 14 = 33 vacation days that are not weekends. Winter Vacation (e.g., Dec 24 - Dec 31): This period is 8 days long. Within these 8 days, there is 1 public holiday (Christmas) and 2 weekend days. This leaves 8 - 1 - 2 = 5 vacation days that are not weekends or public holidays. Total Extra Vacation Days: 33 (Summer) + 5 (Winter) = 38 days Grand Total and Comparison Now, we add up the different types of holidays: Total = (Weekend Days) + (Public Holidays on Weekdays) + (Extra Vacation Days) Total = 104 + 10 + 38 Total = 152 days Conclusion: The exact number of holidays, including weekends and vacations, for a typical school student in 2025 is approximately 152 days. This shows that the initial estimate of 150-160 days was very close to the actual number.
