Question 1 (a) Pratibha uses the digits ‘4’, ‘7’, ‘3’ and ‘2’, and makes the smallest and largest 4-digit numbers with them: 2347 and 7432. The difference between these two numbers is 7432 – 2347 = 5085. The sum of these two numbers is 9779. Choose 4 -digits to make: a. The difference between the largest and smallest numbers greater than 5085.To get a large difference, we need to choose very big and very small digits Let’s choose digits be 9, 8, 2, 1. So, Largest Number: 9821 Smallest Number: 1289 Difference: 9821 - 1289 = 8532, which is greater than 5085. Question 1 (b) (b) The difference between the largest and smallest numbers less than 5085.To get a small difference, we need to choose very similar digits Let’s choose digits be 6, 5, 4, 3. So, Largest Number: 6543 Smallest Number: 3456 Difference: 6543 – 3456 = 3087, which is less than 5085. Question 1 (c) The sum of the largest and smallest numbers greater than 9779.We need to get a sum more than 9779. So, if we get one number starting with 9, and 8 - we can get larger sum Let’s choose digits be 9, 8, 7, 6. So, Largest Number: 9876 Smallest Number: 6789 Sum: 9876 + 6789 = 16,665, which is greater than 9779. Question 1 (d) The sum of the largest and smallest numbers less than 9779.We need to get a sum less than 9779. So, if we get both numbers starting with 4 - we can get a smaller Let’s choose digits be 4, 3, 2, 1. So, Largest Number: 4321 Smallest Number: 1234 Sum: 4321 + 1234 = 5,555, which is less than 9779.
