Question 6 Using only reasoning of how terms change their values, fill the blanks to make the expressions on either side of the equality (=) equal. (a) 423 + ____ = 419 + ____ We notice Left side increases by 423 Right side increases by only 419 (that’s 4 less) To balance it, we need to add 4 more on the right to make it equal. So, our equation now becomes 423 + ____ = 419 + ____ + 4 Now, we can add any number both sides, lets add 10 423 + 10 = 419 + 10 + 4 423 + 10 = 419 + 14 Question 6 Using only reasoning of how terms change their values, fill the blanks to make the expressions on either side of the equality (=) equal. (b) 207 – 68 = 210 – ____ We notice Right side starts 3 more (210 vs. 207) So, to keep the same result, we must also subtract 3 more from the right side. So: 207 – 68 = 210 – 71 Because 71 is 68 + 3
