Question 5 Add brackets at appropriate places in the expressions such that they lead to the values indicated. (a) 34 – 9 + 12 = 13 Without brackets: 34 – 9 + 12 = 37 ❌ Trying adding brackets: 34 – (9 + 12) = 34 – 21 = 13 ✅ ∴ Answer (a): 34 – (9 + 12) = 13 Question 5 Add brackets at appropriate places in the expressions such that they lead to the values indicated. (b) 56 – 14 – 8 = 34 Without brackets: 56 – 14 – 8 = 34 ✅ This already works as written. ✅ Answer (b): (56 – 14) – 8 = 34 (or just leave as is: 56 – 14 – 8 = 34) Question 5 Add brackets at appropriate places in the expressions such that they lead to the values indicated. (c) –22 – 12 + 10 + 22 = – 22 Since sum is –22 We will try to make the last three terms 0 Adding brackets –22 – (12 + 10) – 22 = –22 + 22 – 22 = – 22 Answer (c) –22 – (12 + 10) + 22 = –22 ✅
