NREGA or as it is now known as MGNREGA stands for Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act . This act was launched in the year 2005 with the intention of providing jobs to the unemployed people of the country. As per this act, the government guarantees 100 days of paid employment to those who cannot find jobs by themselves and if the government fails to do so, then it will provide the wages to those registered under this act as per the wage rate prevailing in the economy.

Other provisions that are guaranteed under this act are -

  1. 100 days of assured employment every year to each household of the rural sector.
  2. One - Third of the total jobs generated under this scheme are reserved for women of the rural sector.
  3. The scheme started with implementation in 50 districts but is now spread over 600 districts of the country.
  4. The governments have to establish Central Employment Guarantee Funds and State Employment Guarantee Funds for the implementation of the scheme. 
  5. If the government fails to do any of the above step within 15 days of its implementation, then the registered people are entitled to unemployment allowance .
