- The river cleaning program in the country was initiated with the launching of the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) in 1985.
- National River Conservation Authority reviewed the progress of the GAP and the necessary corrections on the basis of the lessons learned and experiences gained from GAP phase – I.
- Due to high pollution levels in most rivers, these have been applied to the country's major polluted rivers under the NRCP. So, In 1995 , the Ganga Action Plan was expanded to include other rivers as part of the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP).
- The NCP has been expanded to include 152 towns located along 27 Interstate rivers in 16 states.
- A total of 215 schemes of pollution abatement (reduction)have been sanctioned . It is planned to treat one million liters of sewage.
