Why was Vernacular Press Act passed? Explain about this Act.

  • Vernacular press act gave the government enormous power to censor and stop newspapers if they went against the british government.
  • The government was allowed to even seize machinery if the newspaper did not comply to the rules.

Answer to be written in exam :

  1. The Vernacular Press Act provided the  government with extensive rights to censor reports  and editorials in the vernacular press.
  2.   The government kept regular track of the vernacular  newspapers published in different provinces.  If any report was judged as seditious ( against the government ), then quickly  that newspaper was warned.  
  3. If the warning was ignored, the press was liable to be  seized and the printing machinery could be seized.
