A natural dye extracted from lichens is dissolved in distilled water to obtain litmus solution.

It is used as an indicator to distinguish between acids and bases .

  • If the medium is acidic , litmus changes its colour to red .
  • If the medium is basic , litmus changes its colour to blue .
  • If the medium is neutral , there is no change in the colour.
