Which of the following are not ionic compounds?

(i) KCl

(ii) HCl

(iii) CCl 4

(iv) NaCl

(A) (i) and (ii)

(B) (ii) and (iii)

(C) (iii) and (iv)

(D) (i) and (iii)

Answer.:

Ionic compounds are only formed between metals and non-metals

  • KCl bonds between Potassium and Chlorine, one of which is a metal and the other a non-metal . Hence it is an ionic compound.
  • Here, HCl   bonds between Hydrogen and Chlorine, both of which are non-metals . Hence it is not an ionic compound.
  • Here, CCl 4 bonds between Carbon and Chlorine, both of which are non-metals . Hence it is not an ionic compound.
  • Here, NaCl bonds between Sodium and Chlorine, one of which is a metal and the other a non-metal . Hence it is an ionic compound.
