Which among the following statement(s) is(are) true?

Exposure of silver chloride to sunlight for a long duration turns grey due to

(i) the formation of silver by decomposition of silver chloride

(ii) sublimation of silver chloride

(iii) decomposition of chlorine gas from silver chloride

(iv) oxidation of silver chloride

(A) (i) only

(B) (i) and (iii)

(C) (ii) and (iii)

(D) (iv) only

Answer

The reaction is as follows:

Exposure of Silver Chloride to Sunlight - Teachoo-01.jpg

In the presence of sunlight , AgCl decomposes to give grey colored Ag.

Also,

  • Sublimation means turning of solid to Gas. Here, Silver does not turn into gas. So, this this not sublimation
  • Decomposition means that single reactant converts into multiple products. Here AgCl is decomposed, not Chlorine gas.
  • Oxidation means Oxygen is added to Silver (Ag), but that is not the case in this reaction

So, the correct option is (a) - (i) only
