Q.) Name the sodium compound which is used for softening hard water.

 

Answer:

 

Washing Soda (Na 2 CO 3 .10H 2 O) is the sodium compound which is used for softening hard water.The carbonate ions (CO 3 2- ) ions in washing soda react with calcium ions in hard water and remove them as insoluble calcium carbonate thus softening the hard water.
