Why is the amount of gas collected in one of the test tubes in Activity 1.7 double of the amount collected in the other? Name this gas.

Answer

Activity 1.7 depicts the process of electrolysis of water .

The decomposition of H 2 O compounds into H 2 and O 2 with the help of electricity is known as electrolysis of water.

Figure 1.6 NCERT

The balanced equation of the chemical reaction is as follows,

2 H 2 O → 2 H 2 + O 2

It is evident from the above chemical equation that,

2 molecules of H 2 O give 2 Molecules of H 2 and 1 Molecule of O 2

Therefore, the amount of H 2 produced in the chemical reaction is double the amount of O 2 produced.

The name of the gas produced in double amounts is Hydrogen gas (H 2 ) .
