Why is vegetative propagation practiced for growing some types of plants.

Answer:

The advantages of vegetative propagation include:

  • Rapid growth - The new plants are grown much faster as compared to those grown by seeds.Potato requires 3 months for forming a new crop if raised from tubers and if raised from seed it will require 15 months.
  • Genetic consistency- The offspring are genetically similar to the parent and have all its characters.
  • Survival rate - The survival rate of crops through propagation is nearly 100% , but in case of seed grown plants, it lies between 5-10%.
  • Seedless plants- Plants which have lost their ability to produce seeds eg. orange banana etc, can be grown using vegetative propagation.
