Why is variation beneficial to the species but not necessarily for the individual?

Answer:

  • Variation refers to the slight changes in DNA which alter the body design of an organism.
  • These are introduced during reproduction
  • Variations are important to ensure survival of species in unfavorable and adverse environments.
  • Since the surroundings are constantly changing , it is necessary that the individuals change according to their surroundings. This is possible because of variations.
  • For example, if there are some drastic changes like excessive heat or cold etc. and all the individuals of a species are exactly identical , then this will lead to complete elimination of the species. However, if there is a variation in some of the individuals, then these will grow in number hence maintaining the species .
  • Variation during reproduction is an inbuilt tendency and it lays a pathway for evolution.
