Explain why the following are made of thermosetting plastics.

(a) Saucepan handles

(b) Electric plugs/switches/plug boards

Answer

(a) Saucepan handles

Saucepan handles are made of thermosetting plastics because it resists fire and doesn't not get soft while heating.

It is a poor conductor of heat and hence doesn’t get hot even when the saucepan is heated

Thus, we use Thermosetting plastic such as Bakelite to make Saucepan Handles

(b) Electric plugs/switches/plug boards

Electric switches are made of thermosetting plastics because it resists fire and is a poor conductor of heat and electricity

Hence, we do not get a shock when electricity passes through the switch

Thus, we use Thermosetting plastic such as Bakelite to make Electric Plugs and Switches
