Solution of equations by Trial and Error

Suppose we have an equation

  3x + 2 = 8

But, what is the value of x?

Let’s try

For x = 0

3 × 0 + 2 = 8

      0 + 2 = 8

           2 = 8

It is not true

So, equation is not satisfied for x = 0

3x + 2 = 8

For x = 1

  3 × 1 + 2 = 8

        3 + 2 = 8

              5 = 8

It is not true

So, equation is not satisfied for x = 1

For x = 2

  3 × 2 + 2 = 8

       6 + 2 = 8

             8 = 8

It is true

So, equation is satisfied for x = 2

So, we say that

  x = 2 is a solution of the equation

Here, we have found the solution

by trying different values of x

And checking

So, this method is known as finding solution of equation by trial & error.
