Avva's determination is clear from the moment she declares, “I want to be independent,” and fixes Saraswati Puja as a firm deadline. Mocked by her granddaughter for her age, grey hair and wrinkled hands, she refuses to be discouraged, answering, “For learning there is no age bar.” She backs her words with relentless effort, reading, writing and reciting the Kannada alphabet every single day for months, even while running the household at sixty-two. Her discipline turns the impossible into reality: by Dassara she reads the title Kashi Yatre by Triveni on her own and passes “with flying colours.” Her achievement is not only literacy but dignity, independence and the respect of her whole family. Avva's journey proves that age and circumstance cannot defeat a truly determined person.

Kashi Yatre wali budhiya ne apni savings ek garib ladki ki shaadi mein de di — apna lifelong Kashi jaane ka sapna chod diya. Yeh selflessness aur compassion dikhata hai. Short mein: desire sacrifice ki real purity se zyada important hai.

29. Write a character sketch of Avva (Krishtakka) as a learner, supported by incidents from the story.
How to answer: About 150 words. Name 3-4 traits, each backed by a specific incident; open and close strongly.

Avva, the narrator's grandmother, is one of literature's most inspiring learners. Though sixty-two and never schooled as a girl, she is intelligent enough to memorise whole episodes of Kashi Yatre by ear. She is deeply self-respecting: she hides her illiteracy rather than ask strangers for help, and her helplessness when she cannot read moves her to act. Her defining quality is determination: she fixes a deadline, works “harder than anybody,” and reads, writes and recites daily until she succeeds. She is also humble and grateful, touching the narrator's feet on Dassara to honour “a teacher, not my granddaughter.” Far from bitter about being denied education, she had earlier ensured all her own children studied well. Disciplined, dignified, humble and unstoppable, Avva shows that the will to learn can triumph over age and circumstance.
