- A 12-year-old girl lives with her grandparents in a village in north Karnataka. Every Wednesday she reads episodes of a Kannada novel Kashi Yatre from the magazine Karmaveera to her grandmother Avva, who cannot read.
- One week, the narrator goes to a wedding and stays away for a week. When she returns, she finds Avva in tears.
- Unable to read the new episode alone, Avva felt helpless and dependent for the first time.
- Avva decides to learn the Kannada alphabet at age 62. She declares: “What use is money when I cannot be independent?” She sets Saraswati Puja as her deadline.
- The narrator teaches her daily. Avva studies with total dedication.
- Reads, repeats, writes, recites every day. The narrator mocked her at first, but Avva responded: “For learning there is no age bar.” .
- On Dassara day, Avva reads the novel Kashi Yatre aloud by herself. She touches the narrator’s feet saying: “I am touching the feet of a teacher, not my granddaughter.”
