  1. A 12-year-old girl lives with her grandparents in a village in north Karnataka. Every Wednesday she reads episodes of a Kannada novel Kashi Yatre from the magazine Karmaveera to her grandmother Avva, who cannot read.
  2. One week, the narrator goes to a wedding and stays away for a week. When she returns, she finds Avva in tears.
  3. Unable to read the new episode alone, Avva felt helpless and dependent for the first time.
  4. Avva decides to learn the Kannada alphabet at age 62. She declares: “What use is money when I cannot be independent?” She sets Saraswati Puja as her deadline.
  5. The narrator teaches her daily. Avva studies with total dedication.
  6. Reads, repeats, writes, recites every day. The narrator mocked her at first, but Avva responded: “For learning there is no age bar.” .
  7. On Dassara day, Avva reads the novel Kashi Yatre aloud by herself. She touches the narrator’s feet saying: “I am touching the feet of a teacher, not my granddaughter.”
