2-D Cartesian Coordinate System We looked at number lines before – that is in 1 Direction only. So, its 1D. But, in real life we have a 2-D plane (like your notebook, screen) To represent a 2D-plane, we use two number lines that cross each other at a right angle (90° degrees) Here are the main parts of this system: x-axis: This is the horizontal line that goes left and right y-axis: This is the vertical line that goes up and down Origin: The exact spot where the x-axis and y-axis cross is called the origin (labeled as "O"). Its mathematical address is (0, 0) Just like a regular thermometer or number line, direction matters: Moving to the right of the origin or upwards means the numbers are positive. Moving to the left of the origin or downwards means the numbers are negative.
