Question 1 - Figure it out (Page 140) When constructing the perpendicular bisector, is it necessary to have the same radius for the arcs above and below XY? Explore this through construction, and then justify your answer. [Hint 1: Any point that is of the same distance from X and Y lies on the perpendicular bisector. [Hint 2: We can draw the whole line if any two of its points are known.]Important thing to note here is The radius of arc from points X & Y above is same The radius of arc from points X & Y below is same It is just that the radius above and below are different Let’s look at this scenario Here AB is still the perpendicular bisector This is because Point A is in the middle of XY Point B is the middle of XY As long as point A is in the middle of X and Y, and point B is in the middle of X and Y, the line connecting them will still be the perpendicular bisector. Thus, we can say No. Is it not necessary to have the same radius (compass width) for the arcs above and below XY
