Part 3: International Heights GraphThe following visualisation shows the change in average heights of 19-year-old boys and girls of different countries from 1989 to 2019. This graph compares 19-year-olds – boys and girls in different countries. x-axis (bottom): Different countries. y-axis (side): Height in cm. Symbols: X and Triangle show the difference between 1989 and 2019 Now, let’s answer some questions. Question How is the graph organised? What information is presented? The countries are not in alphabetical order. They are organized by height. The shortest countries are on the left (Timor-Leste) and the tallest countries are on the right (Netherlands). Note: The numbers don't start at 0! They start at 145 cm. The text in the image calls this a "zoomed in" look. If they started at 0, all the dots would be squished at the top, and it would be hard to see the small differences. Question What do you find interesting? Our most interesting findings are The Netherlands is the tallest: The average 19-year-old boy there is over 180 cm! Everyone is growing: In almost every country, the "2019" mark is higher than the "1989" mark. The Country Gap: In some countries (like China or South Korea), there is a big gap between the 1989 mark and the 2019 mark. This means their diets and health improved a lot, making them grow much taller in just 30 years. The Gap Between Boys and Girls: In every single country listed, the Crosses (×) are floating much higher than the Triangles (▲). This means, On average, 19-year-old boys are taller than 19-year-old girls all over the world, regardless of the country.
