Question 6 We have expanded and simplified some algebraic expressions below to their simplest forms. (i) Check each of the simplifications and see if there is a mistake. (ii) If there is a mistake, try to explain what could have gone wrong. (iii) Then write the correct expression. Is there a mistake? Yes What went wrong? The student distributed the 3a to both numbers inside. You only do that if there is a plus (+) or minus (-) sign inside. Since it is multiplication inside (2b × 3c), you just multiply everything together in one long chain. Correct solution 3a(2b × 3𝑐) =𝟑𝒂 × 𝟐𝒃 × 𝟑𝒄 =3 × 2 × 3 × 𝑎 × 𝑏 × 𝑐 =𝟏𝟖𝒂𝒃𝒄
